Skyrim Thoughts



Spoilers...obviously.

I missed a few things like how 'speech' and 'lock-picking' skills are useless.  I'm still playing Skyrim so let that show that I am really starting to love this game.  I can't stress enough how large and full this game is.  Virtually every cave, tower, ruin etc. has, on some level, a story to tell.  Also keep in mind that I've only been using bows and destruction magic, so as far as combat goes, that's all I know of.

I can agree with you on quite a few of those points, but not the combat. You definitely can't call the combat boring in comparison to what it was before.

Especially the dragons. Considering what came before them was the very tedious and repetative Oblivion Gates they're a major improvement, and killing on with a pick-axe never gets old.

Aye, skyrim doesn't do a good job of venerating players for their achievements. I would have liked some unique dragons with associated shouts too. Ah, and enchanting & Smithing reduce my motivation to explore - it's bad knowing that there are no items in Skyrim, created by Daedra, Divine or Dragon, that are better than that which the players can create themselves.

Otherwise, I'm happy with it. I only saw 2 random dragons by level 26. Maybe fast-travel spawns them to punish the 'lazy'? :)

A lot of what you've said here is spot-on. The 2 parts that stood out most were the bits about how ineffective the dragons were and the similarity of the enemies.
Dragons, in my opinion, were a pretty weak addition to the Elder Scrolls series. For instance, I had just fast travelled to a city and got outside to move to another place when I hear the music change and see a dragon start to wheel about in the sky. So I draw my bow and have a few shots at it, at this point it decides to stay airborne.....and for the next 5 minutes it continues to fly. Now I'm getting annoyed because it hasn't attacked or landed and I've barely done any damage (I'm not great at hitting moving targets) and I just decided to leave it. The dragon soul was worth so little to me that I wasn't going to waste another 5 minutes trying to get it. Another time one landed and was 3 hit killed from full health by a giant which took almost no damage, this leads me to believe that perhaps the giants should have been the "main enemy" instead. They're twice as hard to kill and can send you to space in 1 hit! (Which is hopelessly buggy wrong too)
The Draugrs I found were tedious at best, in Oblivion in caves you were likely to encounter zombies, skeletons and a few other enemies in Skyrim you're lucky if you get a Restless Draugr! Incidentally the difficulty curve between enemies in the world was far too steep, there were a few easy ones like wolves etc. but then it takes a massive leap and you start getting hit by Sabre Cats, Frostbite Spiders and Mammoths which are miles more difficult that the other creatures.
One point you touched on was the dragon bones. Now I love the idea of them but they weigh far too much e.g. 1 dragon scale weighs as much as a steel greatsword (?), that seems just a bit off. I would also complain about the amount of loot you get from dungeons. It's alright the dungeons being huge but if you've not got enough inventory to handle the good stuff then you'll have to drop lots of useful items this is a massive concern when you don't have a house as you've got nowhere to store anything. From this comes the appalling amount of gold the shopkeepers have on their person. They each have around 800 gold which was fine for Oblivion but when you're trying to sell 6 dragon bones, 10 dragon scales and 50+ precious gems they just can't handle it!

But against what I've said I still love this game, it's not what everybody hyped it up to be and I still prefer Oblivion but the things this game does well are damn near perfect.
